Did a couple of hundred mixed urban/motorway/A-road miles on an "R" the other day. Very impressed with the handling and brakes. Could chuck it around like a chunky sportsbike, brake way later than you have any right to and cruise along comfortably. The suspension is far better than the gen 1 roadster I rode. It's very, very easy to ride - no surprises.

Downsides? Well, with that great chassis and brakes - the motor is just not powerful enough. Within 10 miles of riding I was pinning the throttle to the stop from 1st gear onwards. It just feels brisk rather than fast. 200bhp would have been a breeze with that capacity motor - you can't call a three quarter of a ton motorcycle with only about 150bhp at the back wheel a power cruiser these days. The Diavel has much better power to weight and the VMAX far more power.
The TC needs some work too, in the wet it was too easy to get a big slide going before the TC caught up regardless of mode. Okay I was provoking it on purpose to see how it reacted but the electronics ought to be better than this.

The other let-down is the instrument cluster - it just doesn't look special enough on a £20K motorcycle.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed every minute of the test ride but left thinking "what if?" - it's a great bike and I'm sure the owners will love it but I think Triumph had the opportunity to turn the power-cruiser world on its head and bottled it.

One of the better triumph tuners here posted a video a while back on FB, stock for stock he was able to get better RWHP from an earlier R3 than the current one, in his words, surprising and disappointing.

Once the bike has been run in and you are able to ride it in 'Sports" mode...adjust the suspension to suit and the crank it you will see the real bike...i mean 2.75 secs to 100kph is quicker than a whole heap of lighter sports bikes...the Diavel is a tad quicker but way lighter too..
My good cobber has recently come off a Triple onto the 'R' model and he says its a triple on steriods!..

You cant get into the locked ECU ...well, no one has as yet i believe, but when its possible....woah!!

I've no doubt mate that it is a beast, what get's it over the line compared to the last model, as you would know, is it's weight advantage. I was disappointed that the GT didn't come with with proper touring gear and also the lack of accessories from Triumph. I had a good look at it before going to the Indian, the dealer even had one available from a stuff up in the order system.

Short answer: Bragging rights.
The guy in that video is correct on all counts, the new Rocket is spectacular in terms of power-to-weight, design and execution. Totally different than its predecessor and in a class by itself.
Still.... the sideways torque from its inline 3 would bother me, and there is such a thing as too big. A lighter version of the T-Bird twin might get me thinking, but - naaa, couldn't part with my ride.

Other than horsepower, what else is there?? I read it's not the greatest touring bike (especially 2Up) and can you imagine wrenching on that!
Sure, a rider has priorities and if speed is one, I'll ride an old VMax 'cruiser' and challenge the Rocket 3, 4, 5 any day

there is a company in America that does a 240 and 260hp kit for the rocket roadster so i can only imagine what would be possible with the R3
